Max Aarons pulled no punches in his assessment of Norwich City’s shock 5-1 home defeat to fellow promoted side Aston Villa.

The right-back was part of a Canaries team which were dominated by a vibrant Villa team which had been bolstered by £130million of talent since last season.

It was the heaviest Carrow Road defeat of Daniel Farke's reign and the 19-year-old was keen to move on as quickly as possible.

"Obviously extremely disappointed," Aarons said. "It's not what we wanted or expected, we came here for three points but we've got to dust ourselves down.

"It's tough to take and it's annoying but we've got to come back from this."

Marco Stiepermann was the main culprit as shooting opportunities were wasted in the early stages but two goals from Wesley in 30 minutes did the damage for the visitors, after Jamal Lewis had also forced a good save and penalty appeals against a Tyrone Mings handball were waved away.

Michael McGovern was the busier of the two goalkeepers though and Anwar El Ghazi also headed against the crossbar for Villa, who took advantage of slack defending to deservedly take control of the game.

"Avoidable goals and I think if we took our chances early on like we did in the Man City game (a 3-2 home win) then it's a different game," Aarons added.

"Frustrating, disappointing, they're the words that describe the game really."

McGovern did make a fine penalty save to deny Wesley a hat-trick before the break but the Canaries couldn't make the most of that let off.

"We said at half-time we were disappointed to be 2-0 down at home but we've got something to play for," the youngster continued.

"Michael's come in and pulled off a brilliant double save but the third goal has killed us really and it was hard from then."

It was a third successive Premier League loss for Farke's team, dropping them into the relegation zone.

"You have a vent, some people are different, some people like to stay quiet," Aarons said of the mood in the City dressing room. "But we'll pick ourselves up from this, it's really disappointing and we'll be disappointed for a few days but we'll come back."
