Stuart Webber’s strong words on football’s suspension have drawn resounding praise from Norwich City supporters but have left some Leeds fans annoyed - despite the sporting director’s admission that he grew up supporting the Yorkshire side.
The Welshman, who engineered City’s 2019 title win ahead of Leeds having joined from Huddersfield in 2017, gave a wide ranging interview to Sky Sports News about the issues affecting the Premier League during the coronavirus pandemic.
His most eye-catching comments were stating that the season needs to be concluded “on the pitch and not in the boardroom”, saying that if Norwich play their remaining games and finish in the bottom three, they can accept relegation, but that Championship clubs should only be promoted if they conclude their season in the same way.
Leeds sit top of the second tier and seven points clear of third place Fulham, with West Brom just a point behind them in seventh, and Webber also went on to say that “any true football fan” wants to see a big club like Leeds back in the top flight, after a 16-year absence.
His interview was largely heralded as very welcome by Canaries supporters. Leeds fans, however, were less impressed.
