Norwich City pair Kenny McLean and Jamal Lewis both suffered international disappointment in tough European Championship qualifiers on Monday night.

McLean was recalled to the Scottish starting line-up for their Group I clash with Belgium at Hampden but spent the majority of the evening on the backfoot as the leaders cruised to a 4-0 victory, with three of the goals coming in the first half.

Lewis was involved in a much closer games as Northern Ireland took on Germany in Belfast in Group C but also ended up on the losing side as the visitors won 2-0.

Both City players played the full 90 minutes and came through the game with no obvious problems.

Kevin de Bruyne inspired Belgium to a comprehensive defeat of Scotland that all but ended their hopes of reaching Euro 2020 via their qualification group.

The Manchester City stars set up Romelu Lukaku, Thomas Vermaelen and Toby Alderweireld in the first half and netted the fourth goal near the end.

Northern Ireland's qualifying hopes suffered a setback as they a pulsating qualifier at Windsor Park.

Marcel Halstenberg's stunning half-volley early in the second half and a stoppage-time goal by Serge Gnabry gave Germany victory.

They moved to the top Group C, above Northern Ireland on goal difference.

City U23 players Archie Mair and Aidan Fitzpatrick were on duty with Scotland U19s as they lost 3-2 to Japan in an international friendly.

The pair have been involved in both of the double-header fixtures against the Japanese, with the opening fixture ending in a 1-1 draw. Mair, who signed from Aberdeen in the summer transfer window, played the full 90 minutes in the game which took place at the Pinatar Arena in Spain. Fellow Canary Fitzpatrick was named among the substitutes as the young Scots prepare for the beginning of their UEFA U19 Championship qualifying campaign in October.

Fitzpatrick played 60 minutes in the opening fixture with manager Billy Stark seeking to rotate his squad ahead of the competitive fixtures next month. Both players have made the step up to their country's U19 ranks this season since joining City in the summer.
