This weekend’s Norwich City player watch focused on right-back SAM BYRAM during a memorable Carrow Road debut as the summer signing helped the Canaries to beat Manchester City 3-2.

2 - Up against England star Raheem Sterling to start with. David Silva chips to the left, Emi Buendia blocks Sterling's initial cross and Byram header can't prevent corner.

5 - David Silva slips a pass behind Buendia to Oleksandr Zinchenko but Byram dives in and wins the ball, then is fouled to get a free-kick and relieve the pressure.

7 - Buendia with a crucial foot in on Sterling, Byram pokes clear for a throw.

10 - John Stones pushes into space and tries to find Sterling on the left but Byram steps in to clear.

12 - Sergio Aguero bundles past Alex Tettey and the Argentine striker gets the ball on the right of the box, Byram stands him up and blocks the shot well, continuing his determined start to the game.

15 - Marco Stiepermann and hooks the ball to Buendia on the right, looks to be fouled by Sterling but Byram keeps the attack alive and then Stiepermann can't slip Byram into the box, choosing the wrong pass.

17 - Right-back does really well to keep a skewed attempt at a cross-field ball from Ben Godfrey from going out for a throw, finds Ibrahim Amadou calmly. Then very similar situation again almost straight away.

23 - Blocks a Sterling cross behind for a corner.

25 - The 25-year-old first beats Sterling to the ball, to cheers, but then loses the England star and slips - Tim Krul claims the cross though.

31 - Relieved to see Sterling head against the post after the attacker had got in front of him to meet a Bernardo Silva header back across goal.

35 - Another good tackle on Sterling to halt an attack, scrambles clear with help of Kenny McLean.

37 - Huge cheer for Byram, keeps pace with Sterling and out-muscles him, then wins a goal-kick by playing it against the Manchester City forward's legs.

41 - Sterling and Bernardo Silva switch sides, but Byram is again in quickly to stop Silva.

43 - Buendia can't prevent Bernardo Silva from crossing - but Byram can again, in the right place to head clear and Stiepermann smashes the ball long.

45 - Has to leave Buendia to try and block cross, as he tracks Zinchenko over-lapping, but cross does come in and Aguero heads in to halve the deficit.

45+2 - BOOKED - Sliding tackle to bring down Bernardo as he broke, took to much of the man to escape unpunished.

48 - Good work combining with Ibrahim Amadou in defence, but then the centre-back's skewed clearance requires good strength from Buendia to hold off Bernardo Silva and Byram completes the clearance.

56 - Heads a Bernardo Silva cross away but Cantwell swings and misses at a clearance, leading to more scrambled defending.

70 - McLean switches to the right but Byram's control lets him down and is robbed by Zinchenko.

72 - Strong tackle is greeted like a goal by the home fans. Attack breaks down and he charges in to beat Aguero to the ball, and wins a free-kick as he's hauled back.

90+4 - Stays close to Sterling but can't prevent the shot, but is relieved to see Krul claim the ball comfortably.

VERDICT: A first Premier League start in 18 months for the summer signing, coming in for the injured Max Aarons at right-back, featured Byram being lauded for his committed defensive efforts by the Carrow Road faithful. Faded, understandably on a difficult day for the injury-ravaged Canaries, but played with spirit and determination against world class opponents. Now the former Leeds and West Ham defender has the chance to restart his career after a difficult injury spell, if he can find full fitness.

RATING: 8 out of 10
