Another of Norwich City’s young prospects has been put forward as the next English talent to try their luck in Germany, with right-back Max Aarons linked with European giants Bayern Munich.

The 20-year-old joins his Canaries and England Under-21 colleague Ben Godfrey in being linked with a move to Germany recently, who is reportedly interesting Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Leipzig.

A number of young English players have found opportunities for top-level experience in the Bundesliga, led by England star Jadon Sancho at Dortmund, who have recently signed Birmingham teenager Jude Bellingham for £25million.

Sky Sports Germany are claiming that Munich are looking at Aarons as possible cover for France star Benjamin Pavard at right-back, following City’s relegation from the Premier League.

The Canaries’ academy product has also been linked with Wolves and Tottenham recently, with the latest report suggesting a fee in the region of 20 million euros (£18m).

Aarons has made 83 appearances for Norwich in two seasons and played the most minutes of any of the club’s outfield players in the top flight this season, tied with goalkeeper Tim Krul as completing 36 matches.

That followed a breakthrough campaign which saw him named EFL Young Player of the Season and included in the Championship Team of the Season following City’s title triumph in 2019.

He has since been capped five times at U21 level by England and been named on the long list for the prestigious Golden Boy award, which selects the best under-21 player in Europe, with respected journalists from across the continent voting for the winner.

The report states that Bayern have been interested in Sergino Dest of Ajax as competition for Pavard and that the Bundesliga champions face competition for the signing of Aarons from Bayer Leverkusen, who will be playing in the Europa League next season after finishing fifth.

VERDICT: Would be a dream move for a young English player, bringing the potential of Champions League and Bundesliga football, and a genuine chance of silverware.

Aarons has been shown to be one of the most experienced players in Europe for his age group, having made his Canaries debut at 18. Like all of the Canaries’ young players this season, he has struggled for consistency but shown glimpses of top-level potential throughout. He has also looked comfortable alongside elite talent when on U21 international duty.

The £18m mentioned would probably need to be the initial fee as part of a bigger deal however, particularly when compared with the expensive outlay Dortmund have just committed to with Birmingham talent Bellingham, who has not achieved anywhere near as much so far.

Aarons is under contract until 2024 and Norwich are not under pressure to sell, but a big-money move for an academy product to a European giant would also be a real feather in the cap for the club’s academy, allowing staff to further emphasise the pathway City can offer to young talent.
