As a very busy transfer window comes to a close for Norwich City, DAVID FREEZER takes a look back at the many deals completed since the start of July.
It may have been a quiet deadline day for Norwich City but it was without doubt the busiest transfer window in the club’s history.
In total a huge 41 pieces of business were completed, with 11 of the 14 arrivals being senior additions and 12 of the 26 exits affecting the first team.
It all kicked off with the announcement that seven senior players would not have their contracts renewed, including long-serving goalkeeper John Ruddy, who went on to join Championship rivals Wolves, as did centre-back Ryan Bennett.
Fellow defenders Steven Whittaker, Seb Bassong and Michael Turner also left as sporting director Stuart Webber slashed City’s wage bill from their Premier League years – and cleared some of the deadwood.
Youssouf Mulmbu and Kyle Lafferty completed the set, with youngsters Ben Killip, Ray Grant and Conor McGrandles also seeing their Canaries careers come to an end.
The arrivals soon started to flow once head coach Daniel Farke was in the building in late May, with forward Marley Watkins kicking things off after agreeing to sign on a free when his Barnsley contract expired.
The expected influx of signings from Germany followed, with Mario Vrancic, Christoph Zimmermann, Marcel Franke, Tom Trybull and Marco Stiepermann all arriving.
The headline sale was academy product Jacob Murphy joining Newcastle for around £12m but Jonny Howson’s sale to Middlesbrough for around £6m was also sobering as City’s hierarchy balanced the books.
Then came that awful 4-0 loss at Millwall, persuading Webber to spend on the penultimate day of the window to bring in centre-back Grant Hanley.
Which made for a quiet deadline day, with young defenders Harry Toffolo and Michee Efete going out on loan, and academy midfielder Agust Hlynsson sold to Danish side Brondby – as a busy window was wearily eased shut at Carrow Road.
