Right now, there’s more desirable places to be than Norwich City for a select number of their stars.

That’s the reality following their relegation from the Premier League. There are players who, some with more justification than others, feel their talents deserve a bigger stage.

This isn’t anything new for the Canaries. The past is littered with players who, having left Norwich, may just have regretted taking the exit route out of Carrow Road.

That’s what must be going through the minds of the likes of Ben Godfrey, Todd Cantwell, Max Aarons or Emi Buendia. The next 12 months and where they spend it will either help or hinder their respective careers.

Take Fulham’s apparent interest in Ben Godfrey. Would the England Under-21 international’s long-term career prospects be best served swapping a promotion tilt with Norwich with another relegation battle in the top-flight? Godfrey and his advisors will know that within less than a year Fulham and Norwich could quite easily be swapping divisions again.

Let’s have a look at a collection of former Norwich players who possibly didn’t make the right move from Norfolk...

Alex Pritchard

Made it abundantly clear that after returning from a pre-season ankle injury for a month that he saw his future elsewhere. Huddersfield swooped and were relegated the following season, as Norwich smashed the Championship to pieces. Three goals and 51 starts later Pritchard must wonder what might have been had he stayed at Norwich.

Josh Murphy

Left for Cardiff City in the summer of 2018 in an £11m deal. Truth be told both parties were happy to part – Murphy had seen his twin brother Jacob depart 12 months earlier and it was probably time to move on. However, he couldn’t help keep the Welsh side up, scoring three goals in 30 appearances for Neil Warnock’s men, as Norwich, under Daniel Farke were promoted. Made 33 appearances last season, scoring six goals as Cardiff lost out in the play-offs to Fulham.

May be a bit harsh to be in this company given what a huge club Newcastle United are and Norwich desperately needed money as they looked to service a crippling wage bill. The £12m deal certainly helped sporting director Stuart Webber on his way to reshaping City under Farke. Newcastle boss Steve Bruce wants to give him another chance this season after struggling on Tyneside and hasn’t got any plans for more loan spells after stints at West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday.

Martin Olsson

It was becoming clear that Norwich were not about to bounce back straight into the Premier League under Alex Neil and then Premier League Swansea stepped in for Olsson in January 2017. He helped Swansea stay up that season but the following campaign was a regular in the Welsh side dropping back into the Championship. Was released in the summer of 2019 and has now moved back to his homeland with Helsingborg.

Leroy Fer

Showed enough promise in the Premier League with Norwich City for QPR to rescue him from a stint in the Championship in 2014. The Londoners ended up finishing bottom and the Dutch midfielder got a move back to the Premier League on loan with Swansea in February 2016 before that switch was made permanent. Currently playing for Feyenoord in the Eredevisie.

Sammy Clingan

‘Oh Sammy Clingan.... it could have been you!’ Famously chased a move out of City, who had just been relegated to League One in 2009. Joined Coventry City and would miss out on the following two years under Paul Lambert when Norwich enjoyed consecutive promotions to the Premier League. Poor old Sammy...
