Martin the hat-trick hero for City U18s after stunning FA Youth Cup winner against Newcastle

Josh Martin was the star of the show and the hat-trick hero as Norwich City Under-18s knocked Newcastle out of the FA Youth Cup – teeing up another Carrow Road tie, which could be against Manchester United.

The young Canaries got off to the perfect start when they took the lead through former Arsenal winger Martin in just the fifth minute, with Tony Springett the architect.

The left winger - one of five 16-year-olds starting for City - made fine progress down the left, striker Tom Dickson-Peters kept the attack moving and Martin was able to strike a rising shot into the top-left corner.

Newcastle rallied though and some sharp passing saw them get on top, equalising in the 26th minute as Dylan Stephenson struck a low shot from the right side of the box across Sam Blair.

However, with sporting director Stuart Webber among the interested spectators, the hosts were able to reclaim the lead with a very similar goal to their first.

Springett beat his marker on the left and his low cross was seized on by Martin near the penalty spot, who calmly tucked his shot into the bottom-left corner.

Tyrese Omotoye almost most it 3-1 a few minutes later but saw his powerful low effort held, wasting the chance to play in the over-lapping Dan Adshead.

England Under-19 international Adshead, signed for a reported fee of around £300,000 from Rochdale this summer having made 10 appearances in League One last season, was by far the most experienced City player.

An attacking half saw the Magpies draw level again in the 41st minute, with City making a hash of clearing a corner and Kain Reed free to nod in at the back post.

American centre-back Jonathan Tomkinson headed onto the roof of the net as the Canaries went close early in the second half and Dickson-Peters really should have made it 3-2 in the 55th minute after good work from Adshead and Omotoye.

City keeper Blair got down well to deny Stephenson a second goal before the hour mark, as heavy rain started to fall, and Josh Scott wasted a fine chance to test the Aylsham youngster soon after.

Martin's fine through-ball was fired wide by Dickson-Peters in the 71st minute and the two-goal attacker also teed up Springett, whose shot was deflected just over the bar.

Substitute Josh Giurgi, replacing the injured Rob Nizet, cleared off his own line from a Newcastle corner in the 75th minute and City went up the other end and were denied by the post, with Dickson-Peters' frustrations continuing.

It was that man Martin proving the difference though, thumping a brilliant 25-yard effort over the keeper to complete his hat-trick and cap a man-of-the-match display.

The exciting attacker joined Norwich in March after a trial, having previously been on the books of Premier League giants Arsenal since he was eight years old.

Now all eyes turn to Leigh Sports Village on Friday night, to see if Manchester United or Lincoln City will be heading to Carrow Road in the fourth round.
