Former Norwich City striker Alex Notman is poised for a surprise return to British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division title favourites King's Lynn in this weekend's pre-season finale at Grantham.

Linnets' boss Tommy Taylor revealed the news on a hectic day at The Walks that saw the departure of back up keeper Arron Benstead to ambitious Ridgeons First Division outfit Haverhill.

Taylor also confirmed midfield target Ashley Nicholls had signed for Grays, while recent recruit Rob Norris has turned his back on the club in favour of Conference National new boys St Albans.

The former Boston United wideman signed Southern League forms after Lynn's 1-1 draw at Newmarket on Saturday. The Nottingham-based teenager had also attracted interest from Tamworth and Burton.

"If he feels playing in the Conference is in his best interests there is not a lot we can do," admitted Taylor. "I know the set-up at St Albans. They already have two very good wide boys so I don't see him being anything more than a squad player. I wish the lad and his family good luck, but we'll move on."

Notman's impending return eclipsed Norris' sharp U-turn. The 26-year-old played half an hour against Folkestone during Lynn's 2004 Eastern Division championship-winning campaign before quitting amid fresh injury concerns over the ankle problem that forced him out of the professional game.

"I know he was here before," said Taylor. "All I'm doing is taking another look at him in a game with nothing at stake. If he's got himself in decent shape then he might be able to do us a job - there's no obligation either way. You certainly can't argue with his pedigree."

Benstead's exit also met with Taylor's blessing.

"They've offered twice as much money," revealed Lynn's boss. "It's a chance for Arron to get regular football but there is always the option for him to come back if Shaun (Marshall) picks up an injury. That's what happened last season, don't forget. It suits both parties. We've still got Higgsy on board as well."

Taylor will take no risks with Adam Smith (ankle) against the Gingerbreads, but triallists Lewis Brooks and Frazer Toms are set for further run outs.

Brooks played in Lynn's 1-0 win at Boston Town on Tuesday. The teenager was released from neighbours Boston United during the summer after a spell at Conference North Alfreton.

"I've offered Lewis a little deal," said Taylor. "It's up to him now whether or not he is happy with that. I was impressed with him when Boston played at our place the other week and he would be a good addition."
