Recent signing Marco Stiepermann made his first Carrow Road start during Norwich’s City’s 4-1 win over Charlton Athletic in the third round of the Carabao Cup, we kept a close eye on his shift at left-back.

Marco Stipermann

5 – 1-0 – Steven Naismith’s mistake allows Lee Novak in behind Stiepermann and striker finishes well into the top-left corner from 15 yards.

10 – Ball forward to Josh Murphy down the left wing is cut out by Anfernee Dijksteel, as continues to struggle to get on the same wavelength as the man in front of him.

15 – Good overlap of Murphy as Marley Watkins picks out the winger, becomes a dummy run which allows the youngster to curl a shot towards the top-right corner, but it’s high and wide.

You may also want to watch:

16 – Excellent shimmy and burst of pace from the 26-year-old leaves Tarique Fosu for dust, plays forward to Murphy who nicks the ball off Dijksteel but his low cross comes to nothing.

19 – James Maddison plays short corner to Wes Hoolahan, who returns the ball to Maddison, who finds the on-running Stiepermann but his close-range shot is deflected behind by Naby Sarr.

21 – 1-1 – Ivo Pinto bursts forward and hits a high cross in from the right that Marley Watkins heads down to Murphy on the edge of the box, who blasts an awkward shot low into the net off his right boot.

24 – Superbly found by Maddison from central free-kick, pulls back to Murphy on the edge of the box, whose low shot is well saved by Dillon Phillips, who is up to block Stiepermann’s shot from an acute angle. Then bursts forward soon after and is hauled back by Fosu 10 yards outside the box but Maddison curls the free-kick over the bar.

28 – Karlan Ahearne-Grant bursts forward after Pinto loses possession in midfield, spreads left to Fosu with Stiepermann caught out but Naismith tracks back well and the former Borussia Dortmund man wins back the ball.

34 – Superb ball down the left to get Murphy in behind his marker but Hoolahan is eventually crowded out in the middle.

35 – Stiepermann oddly goes down under pressure from Ahearne-Grant inside his own box and is fortunate to see the youngster make a mess of his shot after no foul is given.

42 – Poor pass inside to Maddison is cut out by Joe Aribo, who plays Billy Clarke in behind Stiepermann but fortunately for City his cross is poor.

HT 1-1

46 – Almost a horrendous start to the second half for Stiepermann as his poor pass infield is nowhere near a team-mate and Ahearne-Grant seizes possession, only to be crowded out by Pinto.

52 – 2-1 – Stiepermann exchanges a nice one-two with Hoolahan on the left, which allows the Irishman to release Murphy, who bundles his way into the box and lashes City in front.

53 – Tenacious chasing of Clarke to steal ball earns applause from the Barclay, before he is brought down to win a free-kick.

55 – Found by Tettey to the left of the box, cuts on to his right and hits a powerful shot from the edge of the box straight at the keeper.

56 – Good block to stop Regan Charles-Cook’s low shot behind for a corner.

63 – Caught by the shoulder of substitute striker Josh Magennis as he heads away, goes down but doesn’t need treatment.

74 – 3-1 – Superb pass from Hoolahan plays Murphy in behind and the winger’s low cross is met by Watkins, whose initial effort is blocked before lashing into the net from six yards.

89 – 4-1 – Yanic Wildschut bursts forward and after seeing his shot loop up, debutant Tom Trybull pounces to steer a fine volley into the net and seal the win.

FT 4-1

Verdict: Some nervy moments defensively mixed with good quality going forward but didn’t look particularly comfortable positionally as a left-back, often drifting in to midfield.
