Police today confirmed they are investigating a fracas between Norwich City's Andy Hughes and a supporter at the end of yesterday's emotion-packed defeat to Burnley.

As the team were walking off the pitch, a supporter in the City Stand began remonstrating with the player.

It is unclear what the fan said, but his remarks angered Hughes, who ran over to the supporter, sat to the left of the away team dugout, and started to argue with him.

Witnesses said the fan told Hughes he was “not fit to wear the shirt” and swore at him. Hughes appeared to be trying to get past the perimeter wall and into the stand when goalkeeper Paul Gallacher stepped in to drag him away. But Hughes, not the most popular figure among sections of the Carrow Road crowd, broke free and went back towards the fan.

Supporters claimed Hughes could be heard shouting “I'm going to take your f*****g head off”. Club officials intervened and escorted him to the changing rooms.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police spoke to a number of individuals and follow-up enquiries will be made today.”
