Ryan Bennett rose above Christian Benteke for much of the afternoon.

The centre-back, continuing to deputise for Michael Turner, could not be faulted for his display – except possibly a first-half header where he might have added to his goal against Reading – and he kept the big striker quiet.

The return of Anthony Pilkington and Wes Hoolahan added a bit of zip to City’s play and it was a mystery why one of them was substituted 20 minutes from time.
