The expected free signing of Barnsley forward Marley Watkins has been confirmed by Norwich City and been welcomed as good news by supporters.

The 26-year-old has agreed a three-year deal and will join on a free transfer once his contract with the Tykes expires at the end of this month.

Watkins has earned his first call up to the Wales squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifier in Serbia and rejected interest from a number of Championship clubs.

City’s East Anglian rivals, Ipswich Town, reportedly had two bids turned down in the January transfer window for Watkins, who was a key figure in the Reds’ rise from League One and impressive Championship bow.

The former Hereford and Inverness attacker scored 10 goals in 45 games for Barnsley last season, with new Canaries head coach Daniel Farke saying: “Marley played brilliantly last season and is proven at this level.”

Sporting director, Stuart Webber, also gave his reaction, saying: ““It’s a signing which epitomises what we’re now trying to do.”
