City boss Glenn Roeder today ruled out any possibility of veteran striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink signing for the club.

The 36-year-old Dutch forward, who left Cardiff in the summer, has spent six days training with the Canaries.

But Roeder said he would not be returning and there was no prospect of even a short-term deal.

Hasselbaink completed his second three-day stint at Colney on Wednesday and has left.

Said Roeder: “He only ever came here for training and people mustn't make too much of it. If I was to sign Jimmy Hasselbaink he wouldn't be here on trial or a test or anything like that - I wouldn't embarrass the man like that.

“Everyone knows what he has done in his career. He asked to come here for some training to improve his physical fitness because although you think you can get fit training on your own, you can't get as fit as you need to be for football without training in a group and playing football.

“We had a practice game on Wednesday for 90 minutes and he played 90 minutes. He said to me afterwards it was the first full game he had played since the FA Cup final.”

But with the transfer window closing at midnight on Monday and City still trying to sign a striker, Roeder said there was no possibility it would be Hasselbaink.

He said: “Jimmy has felt the six days training here has benefited him greatly but I think he has other plans.

“I don't think Jimmy is looking that way anyway. We've had a conversation that needs to remain private.

“It was great having him around the place, it was good for our young strikers and young players in general, how he carried himself on the training ground and how he trained. He's still a very motivated guy and if you were in his team and you made a mistake he'd give you those eyes that made you run a million miles away.”

Roeder is still confident of bringing in a new striker, even if it means a loan after the window closes.

“I will get one we feel comfortable with whether it's Monday or the week after,” he said. “I think there's enough money in the budget to get a decent one.”

Meanwhile, City have no injury concerns ahead of tomorrow's Championship game against Birmingham City at Carrow Road (3pm), apart from long-term absentee Gary Doherty and summer signing David Bell, set to resume training with the first team next week.
