If Norwich City do decide to cash in on Cameron Jerome this summer it could well come back to bite them on the backside.

It is likely the experienced forward is one of the club’s better earners having committed to a new three-year deal following relegation from the Premier League.

That has led to The Mirror reporting the Canaries want to offload Jerome, who will turn 31 in August, and touting Middlesbrough and Sunderland with interest in his services.

Had the interest been from clubs in the top flight then it would not have been too alarming but to consider selling last season’s top scorer to teams who will potentially be promotion rivals seems unwise to say the least.

If it were newly promoted Brighton or even Jerome’s hometown club Huddersfield taking Jerome back to English football’s top table, then fair enough, but that would seem unlikely.

As well as the powerful striker has done for City in the Championship – scoring 36 in 80 matches – his record at the top level is not great, managing just three goals in the relegation campaign of 2015-16 and just twice when on loan at Crystal Palace in 2013-14.

That ship has probably sailed for Jerome at his age but he can certainly play his part in getting Norwich back to the land of wealth and television hype.

His attitude, work rate and goals – 10 in 16 matches – during the early months of 2017 were crucial. As confidence continued to disappear and form nosedived in the closing stages of Alex Neil’s reign, Jerome was one of the few players who could hold their head high.

He covered admirably for the three-games suspension and one-month injury absence of Nelson Oliveira admirably.

The Portuguese looks likely to be the first choice striker this season and it’s fair to say City look a more fluid attacking force when Oliveira is in tandem with the creative midfielders.

However, few Championship defenders will relish seeing the pace and strength of Jerome climbing off the substitutes bench.
