The parents of a sports-mad teenager who died from a rare form of cancer have spoken of their pride that more than £10,000 has been raised for charity since his death.

Matthew Green's colleagues have organised a five-a-side football tournament as a tribute to him and are looking for people to take part.

Matthew, an all-round sportsman from Hales, near Loddon, died at the age of 19 in 2004. His fitness had masked the fact he was suffering from teratoma, a cancer which affects the heart and lungs.

Today his parents, John and Sara, spoke of the overwhelming pride they feel that thousands of pounds have been raised since his death to help the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey where he died.

Mrs Green said today: “It's fantastic that they want to remember him in this way. His old football team do something every year and it's the same with the cricket team at Hales.”

Mr Green said Matthew had played five sports at county level, so it was fitting that much of the fundraising in his honour took the form of sporting events.

Matthew's former colleagues at Panks Engineers, in Heigham Street, have organised a five-a-side football competition at 11am on June 16, at the Anglian Windows Social Club in Cromer Road.

Deborah Dakers, a friend of Matthew, said: “We thought it would be nice to raise money by doing something that Matt loved. Everyone here took it hard when he died. We really didn't have the chance to say goodbye.”

Since his death, more than £10,000 has been raised for the Royal Marsden.
