Spixworth United v Thetford Town Norfolk Senior Cup

Spixworth moved comfortably into round four of the Norfolk Senior Cup on Saturday, a

Damian Didwell hat trick contributing to an excellent 4 - 2 home victory over Ridgeons League Thetford Town. Without the services of manager 'Midi' Brown, attending his sons wedding, Spixworth were boosted by the return after three weeks of regular central defenders Mark Bloomfield and Ben Gowing. Against a very skilful Thetford side, this was arguably Spixworths best performance of the season!

In front of another sizeable crowd, both teams contributed to a frenetic opening period. Lee Askew struck the foot of an upright following a surging run from Spixworths half, play then switched to the other end where a Thetford forward headed against the crossbar. From this Spixworth swept forward and took the lead after eight minutes, Lee Askew scoring from fifteen yards after some very good attacking play by right back Carlos Blanco. Ahead, Spixworth now began to control proceedings, regularly testing the visitors defence and creating a host of scoring opportunities. Lee Cosgrove, Peter Williams, Ben Gowing and Lee Askew all had chances to score but it was not until seven minutes before half time that Spixworth increased their lead, Damian Didwell accurately heading in from Lee Askews pinpoint cross.

Making a tactical substitution at the interval, Thetford made a strong start to the second half. Despite being penned back for several minutes Spixworth went further ahead with their first attack of the half. Enterprising play from Ryan Smith presented Damian Didwell with an opportunity from five yards which he gratefully accepted. Two minutes later and just ten minutes into the half the tie was effectively over, Damian collecting his third and Spixworths fourth from the penalty spot. Spixworth players, supporters, and management were delighted, there have been many occasions this season when the team has threatened to build a considerable lead, on Saturday they delivered. Thetford appeared shell shocked but to their credit they continued to play controlled attacking football and for the final half hour enjoyed the greater share of play! Taking advantage of a quick free kick, a decision which was still being discussed an hour after the game had finished, they pulled a goal back. Five minutes from time they further reduced the arrears scoring from close range after the home defence had failed to clear positively.

A very good result for Spixworth who will be eagerly awaiting the draw for round four. Assistant manager Glen Pitcher and coach Neil Prior were quick to point out afterwards, 'Midi' will have to be absent for the next round!

Both teams are to be complimented for producing a very entertaining Norfolk Senior Cup tie.
