LORNA MARSH
Norwich City fans stepped up their campaign against under-fire manager Nigel Worthington at the weekend as hundreds gathered before the Stoke match to demand his sacking.
Angry protestors braved the cold to shout chants outside the ground for an hour before kick-off and, despite the club's 2-1 win, a small group returned after the match to repeat their demands.
Before going in to the game around 300 fans took a short march from the Riverside Swimming Centre to the Carrow Road ground at 2pm and gathered to shout chants like: “Worthy out”, “You're not Worthy any more” and “Let's be sacking you”, a play on the famous Delia Smith “Let's be having you” rallying cry.
Hilary Kemp, from Horsford, who is in her 50s, dressed up as a nurse after club vice-chairman Barry Skipper likened protestors to those who abused nurses.
She said Worthington had been given more than a fair chance and it was time for him to go.
“This is very important to every true fan,” she said. “We all support the club and we will be there long after he's gone. The heart has gone out of the club and he hasn't got the inspiration to put back into the team. He has to go now.”
David Boon, 75, from Horsford, was holding a banner saying there was no crisis in the club, simply that Worthington had to go. He said: “He's lost the plot and lost the dressing room. We need change.”
