Wycombe boss Peter Taylor admitted he was in the hunt for City's first summer signing, highly-rated midfielder Matt Gill. Taylor had been courting the 28-year-old out-of-contract Exeter midfielder but, after holding talks with both clubs, Gill chose the Canaries instead.

"He would have been a very good signing for us," said Taylor. "If Norwich hadn't come in for him I think he would have been a Wycombe player. But Norwich is a big club and he comes from Norfolk, so as soon as they got their house in order I thought they would get him. It is a blow because I wanted another confident footballer in the team."
