King's Lynn boss Tommy Taylor admitted yesterday he is spoilt for choice after completing the signing of ex-Nottingham Forest trainee Steve Melton.

The 28-year-old central midfielder goes straight into Taylor's squad for this weekend's FA Trophy test at Worthing after completing his move to the British Gas Business, Southern League Premier Division leaders.

Taylor pounced for the Lincoln-born playmaker following his release from Alfreton as part of cost-cutting measures in the wake of the Nationwide North club's surprise FA Cup exit.

Former Norwich academy product Greg Crane trained with his new team-mates this week as he served out the remaining fortnight of a lengthy suspension.

Taylor also confirmed injured trio Matt O'Halloran, Grant Cooper and Shaun Marshall are all in contention for this Saturday's tie at the Ryman Premier strugglers.

“I'll make one or two changes but there's no way we will treat the competition lightly,” he said.

“Confidence is high, the boys are on a roll, and the prize money is decent. We've got a big FA Cup match the week after, but all I'm focusing on is this game.”

Experienced league campaigner Melton is set to start his Linnets career on the bench.

“He had other options, but the lad wanted to join us,” said Taylor. “The lad has a good pedigree - he knows the ropes, has a nice bit of pace and is a good passer.

“He wants to get in the box as well which is something I felt we lacked - with the likes of Rob Norris and Alex Notman I think we've got some running power in the side now.”

Striker Matt Nolan is poised for a start, with Taylor looking to recruit another front-man to complete his squad building.

“I've got my eye on someone, but it's not going to happen this minute,” he said. “I'm very happy with us in that department. We are creating plenty of chances and scoring goals. I just worry if we pick up a couple of injuries.

“Matty will start at Worthing. His attitude has been spot on and now has a chance to show me he deserves to be our top centre-forward. Michael Frew has been working his socks off and Jack can't stop scoring.”

Taylor also faces a central defensive dilemma with Grant Cooper's (rib) return.

“Charlie (Defty) hasn't let me down in any way - it's another tough one,” he said.

“Matty O should be fine. His calf is badly bruised and he didn't train Tuesday, but as long as he doesn't get another kick in the same area then he will be okay. Shaun did train, although he still has to go back into hospital for an exploratory operation. I'll see how both those lads get through the rest of this week.”

Taylor confirmed Stephen Harvey and Sam Gaughran are set for a Ridgeons' reserves run-out this weekend against Diss.
