Wisbech Town boss Roy McManus has refused to commit his future to the Ridgeons Premier club.

McManus is seeking clarification from the board about the club's reserve team and his playing budget for next season before deciding to stay at the helm.

He said: “There's been talk of the reserve team being scrapped next season to cut costs, but this has not been made official. If this happens I need to know if this is a temporary measure and, if it is, what sort of money will be available to bring in new players, and what size squad will I have to work with.

“I've had a fantastic time since rejoining Wisbech and I've been incredibly proud of the lads for achieving what they have done. But I need to know where I stand.”

McManus had a recent stint in African football with a junior league team in Togo called Roy McManus FC named in his honour.

He said: “I've been invited to go back there in October and to attend Togo's national stadium. If I decide to manage Wisbech next season I will have to cancel that trip because I'll have to commit 100pc to the job.”

McManus has been a huge hit with the Wisbech fans since taking over as manager from Ian Jones and Mel Mattless in October. The cash-strapped club faced a relegation scrap having won two and lost six of their nine matches and had just suffered a 9-0 thrashing to Soham but the Fenmen finished a comfortable 12th.

Assistant manager and first team player Steve Appleby admitted he is keen to stay on after rejoining the club this season as McManus' first signing.

He said: “If Roy is manager next season then I definitely want to stay.”

But I live in Boston so if he left I would need to do a managerial role alongside someone else. Like Roy, I'm waiting to hear about the board's plans, but I came here to get into management and I've had a great time. I'm keen to continue playing next year as well. It's been very refreshing to see the passion and team spirit that the players at Wisbech have.”
