Todd Cantwell would be a “superb signing” for Leeds United.

That’s the verdict of former Ipswich Town striker turned pundit Darren Bent.

The ex-Tottenham and Sunderland forward believes Cantwell would be a perfect addition to Marcelo Bielsa’s side but warned the deal may take some time to broker.

“Because he’s really young, I think it’s a really good bit of business,” he said. “Obviously he’s gone down to the Championship now so he’ll be desperate to get to the Premier League.

“For Leeds, I think it would be a superb signing. I’m hoping that they get that done.

“I’m sure he’s got a real desire to get back to the Premier League.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if that move comes off and I think we’ll see quite a lot of late transfer deals coming towards the end of the window.”

Former Leeds forward Noel Whelan added his voice to the groundswell of opinion that Cantwell fits the profile of player that Bielsa likes to work with.

“Again, he’s the right age that Marcelo Bielsa wants to develop and that’s what it is for him, it’s about developing players,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Very rarely will he go for the already ready-made type of player – he wants to develop them and educate them.

“That’s what he’s been doing with everybody in the team, to be quite honest with you.

“The education he’s put into the individuals, telling them they need to do their jobs, he’s improved everybody.

“So I’m sure Cantwell would jump at the chance to come to Leeds and work with him and play with the players that are there.

“The style of play he would suit down to the ground, there’s absolutely no doubt about that.

“He’s got energy, he’s got vision, he’s creative and there’s definitely more to come because of the age that he’s at.

“If that can get done and across the line then we’ve got that other player there, that number 10 that can do something different and is exciting.”

Cantwell was left out of the Norwich squad that lost to Bournemouth last weekend alongside Emi Buendia with head coach Daniel Farke criticising the pair for a lack of focus in training leading up to the game.
