Ex-Ipswich Town defender and current Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray claims that the idea that the table should be taken as it currently stands ‘doesn’t bear thinking about’.

The Premier League, EFL, FA and the National League announced they were suspending the domestic leagues until April 4 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ex-Norwich City striker Chris Sutton claimed that freezing the table was the ‘fairest solution’ to conclude the current season, something that Mowbray fundamentally disagrees with.

Mowbray’s side sit 10th in the Championship, just three points behind 6th placed Preston North End.

Ewood Park is home to former City duo Elliott Bennett and Bradley Johnson, both of whom will be looking to secure another promotion to the top-flight.

Mowbray told the club’s website: “If you were a Leeds United player, member of staff or supporter, or West Bromwich Albion, or even Norwich City or Liverpool, it doesn’t bear thinking about.”

City still have nine pivotal games to play, with 27 points still to play for. Although unlikely, the Canaries can still mathematically finish above fifth-placed Manchester United.

Given the peak of the pandemic is expected in 10-14 weeks, resuming football in April appears unlikely. The Premier League are set to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday with its 20 members to discuss the future of this season.

The 56-year-old is adamant the remainder of the current season needs to be concluded, regardless of how long that takes.

“I think we have to get the season finished. I don’t know/ how long – I heard experts say that this virus might peak in early June. And then we might have to finish the last nine games in a six-week period.

“In the middle of July, are we still playing football? I’m not sure. And I’m thankful I don’t have to make those decisions. Some countries have curtailed their season now, but I’m not sure that’s right.”

Uefa, the European governing body, announced it was postponing the European Championships until 2021, allowing domestic leagues around the continent to complete their respective seasons.
