They may know their way to San Jose, but it seems Darren Huckerby's new American fans are struggling to put the striker's former club on the map, although they have already hailed him for scoring one of the best goals in history.

In one of his first television interviews after signing for the San Jose Earthquakes in California, the ex-Canaries two-times player of the year was questioned by celebrity presenter Gary Radnich, of The World According to Gary, a show on local channel KRON 4.

But despite hailing him as a legend - and even praising him for apparently scoring the best goal ever in football history - the interviewer showed some confusion about where exactly Hucks's former club is.

In the four-minute piece, Mr Radnich introduced the interview: “We weren't joking, San Jose Earthquakes have just acquired Darren Hucker… er, Huckerby. He's one of the great stars from England. We will roll some of the tape and show you this man in action.

“When you go on the internet, he is a terrific star, look at this stuff [shows video footage of Huckerby playing for Norwich City], he's got scoring ability, experience, talent, he comes from the Nor-folk team, for the last five years starring in North East England, scoring 34 goals at Norwich, just to be correct, thanks for whoever put that in, whoever put Nor-folk in start packing.”

The jet-heeled winger, 32, signed for the Major League Soccer side after his contract at Norwich City ran out after five wonderful years at the club.

While he had more than his share of impressive achievements in English football, his new hosts have one bold claim for their new signing - that he scored the best goal ever, in a game against “Manchester”.

Later in the interview, Mr Radnich said: “You supposedly, according to the internet and our international sources, are responsible for the greatest goal ever. You know what I'm talking about?”

Huckerby: “Err… I don't know about that, I scored a couple of good goals…”

Mr Radnich: “It was against Manchester.”

Huckerby: “Yeah, it was a few years ago…”

Mr Radnich: “We are looking at it here, man you are weaving through everybody.”

But, unbeknown to the ex Canary hero the goal shown was the cracker he scored against Birmingham last year.

Elsewhere in the wide ranging interview, the striker was also asked his views on David and Victoria Beckham, former US player Freddie Adu and his wife, who has remained in the UK, and whom he described as “too old” to be a pop star.

Asked about his legendary status in Norwich and the “numerous” tributes paid to him at the end of his Canaries career, he said: “I have had a good few years, we won the league in my first season. I got two player of the years and the fans took to me and seemed to like the way I play, so I hope it will be the same here.”

The transcript in full - TV presenter Gary Radnich interviews the legend Darren Huckerby for US channel Kron 4.

Gary Radnich: He is an English legend just acquired by the San Jose Earthquakes. Look at this, if you go on the internet, Huckerby is his name. Darren is standing by, just has [sic] arrived in this country.

He is a legend and, er, we will see how legendary he is with an interview. Darren, can you handle it?

Darren Huckerby: I'll do my best.

GR: OK my friend, he's a legend, next.

[Commercial break]

GR: We weren't joking, San Jose Earthquakes have just acquired Darren Hucker… er, Huckerby. He's one of the great stars from England. We will roll some of the tape and show you this man in action.

When you go on the internet, he is a terrific star, look at this stuff [video footage of Huckerby playing for Norwich City], he's got scoring ability, experience, talent, he comes from the Nor-folk team, for the last five years staring in North East England, scoring 34 goals at Norwich, just to be correct, thanks for whoever put that in, whoever put Nor-folk in start packing [laughs].

Darren Huckerby joins us. Hi Darren, how are you?

DH: I'm good, how are you?

GR: Why have you come to the US?

DH: Because the sun's shining, it's a great place to live and I'm looking forward to hopefully making the team a better team.

GR: I understand when you left there was, like, a big deal over there, there were numerous tributes to you. Putting aside modesty can you explain to our American audience?

DH: I think, you know, I have had a good few years, we won the league in my first season. I got two player of the years and the fans took to me and seemed to like the way I play, so I hope it will be the same here.

GR: OK, have you heard about this, I'm sure you have, let me set up for the audience, you supposedly, according to the internet and our international sources, are responsible for the greatest goal ever. You know what I'm talking about?

DH: Err… I don't know about that, I scored a couple of good goals…

GR: It was against Manchester.

DH: Yeah, it was a few years ago…

[Unbeknown to Darren, the viewers are shown his goal against Birmingham]

GR: We are looking at it here, man you are weaving through everybody.

DH: Yeah, like I say, it was quite a long time ago. David Beckham was playing in the other team. It was nice to win the game.

GR: I just watched it. It's the second greatest I have seen.

DH: No, it's probably in the top 100…

GR: You weave through the other team. Hey, compared to soccer in England, you are going to play for the Earthquakes in Major League Soccer. Without being too caustic is it a little bit of a step down playing here in the US?

DH: Probably it is a step down from the Premier League, the Premier League is probably the best in the world. But from what I have seen so far the players look big and strong, they are all athletic, it's going to be a challenge.

GR: You are going to have to play against Beckham. Is he as great as his hype makes him out to be?

DH: He has been one of the best players in world football over the last 10 years. Maybe he's not as good as he once was but he's still a very good player.

GR: Do you like Victoria Beckham?

DH: She seems OK to me, yeah.

GR: [Laughs] I'm just playing with you. Are you a married man, do you have a famous girlfriend we can do anything to promote?

DH: Not really, no, I'm married but she's not a pop singer, it's too late for her, she's too old.

GR: [Laughs] OK, I appreciate that. How about Freddie Adu? He was a big name here in the US who went to play overseas. Have you followed Freddie at all?

DH: When he was a lot younger a lot of people said he was good enough to go to Manchester United or Chelsea, but it never really happened. He is still doing quite well but he's not ready for the big four in England.

GR: The big soccer story at the moment is that Ronaldinho has signed for AC Milan and is going to be paid $3.4m. Is that similar to what the Earthquakes are paying you?

DH: I think we tried to get him here first but I came instead, so what can you say?

GR: OK, are you going to live in San Jose?

DH: Yes, it's a beautiful place, I'm looking forward to the whole lifestyle and I'm looking forward to playing a few games.

GR: OK, well we are looking forward to seeing you in action for the Earthquakes. Thanks for coming on. That's the legend Darren Huckerby. Seems like a really nice guy and we will find out. He just steps of the plane and says where's Kron? I want to work for you so we wish him all the best. Darren Huckerby.
