After dominating this FA Vase game for the opening 30 minutes, Dereham sunk to a 3-1 defeat with poor finishing causing their downfall.
Leading scorer Danny Beaumont opened the scoring on four minutes when he fired home from the edge of the box after a superb run by Ollie Willis.
After several missed chances keeper John Higgs made a good save from Trapp's 25-yard drive before failing to come for a cross which allowed Darren Lynch an easy chance to head home the equaliser.
The home side then went in front in the 59th minute when Lunch crossed for the unmarked Rob McDonald to net from close range.
Dereham could not reproduce their flowing football of the first half and Newport sealed victory with five minutes remaining when Vinnie Shrieves scored following a poor clearance to take his side into the next round.
