Rangers left-back Steven Smith was today unveiled as Norwich City's third signing of the summer.

The 24-year-old, who was the Scottish giants' young player of the year in 2006, will join the Canaries in a Bosman deal on July 1 on a two-year contract.

He made 74 first team appearances for Rangers, including five in the Uefa Cup and two in the Champions League.

The young Scottish defender made his debut for Rangers against Hearts in a 3-2 SPL victory in November 2004.

He scored his first goal for the Glasgow club in a 2-0 win over Dunfermline in November 2006 but was then sidelined for 16 months after the Old Firm game in December of that year suffering from groin problems.

Smith forced his way back into the first team in April 2008 and went on to play an important role in the title run-in as Rangers clinched the 2008-09 league and cup double.

Norwich City boss Paul Lambert commented: "I'm delighted. He's come from a massive club in Rangers and he'll fit in well here and I'm looking forward to him joining us.

"He's a left-back with a terrific engine and he'll be part of a squad that will hopefully do well next season."

At a press conference at Carrow Road this afternoon he commented: "I'm delighted to be here. My contract with Rangers was running out in the summer and this was the most attractive option I had, to come to Norwich.

"Meeting the manager, seeing the stadium and the training ground just confirmed to me what a great option it is and I'm pleased it's all been sorted out."

Asked what knowledge he had about life in the Championship, he said: "A fair bit. I think in Scotland a lot of people watch it because a lot of Scottish players have come to the Championship and done really well, including people I've played with and grown up with. So it's a league I've paid close attention to and it's one I'm looking forward to playing in."

And on his perception of the strengths he brings to the Canary mix as a player, he replied: "I would say going forward but also over the last few years I've developed my defending as well, something I've learned and picked up from the players that I've played with. I would say that if you can a mix of both of those qualities then you've got the makings of a decent full-back."

With stiff opposition for the left-back berth a constant feature of his years at Ibrox, Smith says he is relishing the chance to battle for a place in Paul Lambert's starting line-up with the experienced Adam Drury, who has 323 appearances for the Canaries under his belt.

"I'm looking forward to it yes. It's part and parcel of being at a big football club is competition and it's something I've had to deal with my whole career. But I also think the boys who have been here this year and worked really hard and played really well to get back to the Championship deserve a shot at this league as well. So there's going to be a lot of competition for places but I'm sure everyone's looking forward to it."
