King's Lynn boss Keith Webb admitted yesterday his young guns' Southern League Cup triumph had given him plenty of food for thought.

Stephen Spriggs marked his first team debut with a winning brace to knock Corby out 2-1 at The Walks and power Lynn into the quarter finals of the competition they won in 2005.

Jack Defty captained a youthful side containing 11 changes to the starting line up from a weekend league defeat at Team Bath and Webb was impressed with how the club's next generation seized their chance.

“I was delighted for the young lads,” he said. “They did ever so well - particularly in the first half I felt we played some decent stuff and the boys were full value for a two goal lead. Corby had the boy Byrne playing who is one of the top scorers in our division and he didn't really get a kick. I don't remember Duncan (McAnally) having too many saves to make.

“I told the boys afterwards they've still got a long way to go but if they keep working hard then they'll give me a nice headache. We want to have players here who can make the step up. It's given the club a nice boost as well. A win's a win and everyone who watched the game went home happy.”

Webb praise stand in skipper Defty for leading Lynn's young brigade.

“We've spoken about Jack needing to work on his fitness levels and for an hour I thought he did well,” said Webb. “He's definitely going in the right direction. I thought Greg Crane was outstanding at the back - he really knitted everything together and young Sam (Gaughran) did well alongside him.”

The Linnets' chief also ran the rule over left sided triallist Lawrance Hunter.

“I've asked him to come along to a few training sessions so we can have a proper look,” said Webb. “I thought he was steady, didn't try to complicate things and he had decent delivery on set pieces. He's unattached at the moment and it's just a case of seeing whether he is capable of making the step up.”

Webb's search for fresh faces is unlikely to pay dividends before Yate's weekend Southern League, Premier Division visit.

“I'm not expecting anything to happen before then,” he said. “We're in touch with clubs all the time and I've got people out watching games this week. We've identified players but it's about trying to prise them out of clubs.”
