Dejected King's Lynn boss Keith Webb labelled last night's Southern League, Premier Division play-off semi-final 1-0 defeat against Maidenhead as 'the biggest disappointment of his career'.

Magpies' defender Mark Nisbet broke Lynn hearts with a stunning 74th minute winner to clinch Maidenhead's place in Saturday's sudden death final at Team Bath for a place in the Conference set up.

“You either curl up or come back stronger,” said Webb. “I've had knockbacks in my life and this is a big one. It's a different scenario because I was in charge - the one making the decisions. When you win it's as a team, when you lose you're on your own.

“No one picks up the manager. There's desolation in the dressing room. You can't say anything to the lads - especially the ones who were in this situation last season.”

Webb has ruled out any knee-jerk reaction after Lynn's latest promotion heartache.

“We need to get this one out of the system and go again,” he said. “I'll take a nice cold look over the summer and sit down with a clear head. There's a lot of decisions to be made. We've got a good squad but we need to add one or two. The board must decide where they want to go now and how we take this club forward.

“Believe me - we are not far away. Look at what Bath have done this season. They went for it with the playing budget and reaped the rewards. We have no divine right to go up. A lot of effort has gone in to get us this far and it's going to take a lot more.”

The Linnets' chief admits Lynn let Maidenhead off the hook after dominating the first half.

“In football if you don't take your chances you always fear something is going to happen at the other end,” he said. “There was no way we were going to dominate for 90 minutes, but they made the most of a 10 minute spell when I felt we dropped off. Jack (Defty) was struggling with his groin so I decided to push Michael Frew up front to give us more punch and they came into it. The goal was probably only one of two shots they had on target all night.”
