King's Lynn boss Keith Webb insists last season's title win has made his Blue Square North new boys hungrier than ever for success ahead of today's latest pre-season friendly at Great Yarmouth (3pm).

Webb has already seen enough in competitive tussles with Cambridge United and Clyde to detect his re-shaped squad is on the right track.

"When players have enjoyed a promotion season you never know if they will come back and rest on their laurels," said Webb. "I've spoken to Lee (Glover) and he feels exactly the same. There is no danger of them going through the motions. If anything I feel they have come back and stepped up a level - if you look at where we were at this time last season.

"We've probably been the underdogs in the last two games so the onus is on us now going to Yarmouth. In that respect it will be a little bit different. Clyde was a great work out. Both teams got what they wanted out of it. Yes, it was competitive. There was an edge but as a manager you would always prefer that type of friendly."

Trialists Kevin Horlock and Michael Deane have been released after featuring in Lynn's early pre-season warm ups. Webb will take no risks with Michael Frew (thigh) and Mark Peters (groin) who both missed the midweek 2-1 defeat against the Scottish First Division outfit.

Webb has paired new signing Julian Joachim and Jack Defty in attack for both Lynn's home pre-season tests. Danny Bloomfield notched a match-winning brace to sink Cambridge United from the bench, but Webb confirmed it is Defty plus one other to lead the line.

"We need competition for places but when Jack is fit it will be who plays alongside him," said Webb. "I think someone playing alongside him will create opportunities for the whole team."

Webb revealed at the club's recent fans' forum he would not have swapped Defty for any other Southern League striker.

"For his type he was the best targetman in the league by a country mile," said Webb. "You can talk about the likes of Canham, who scored 41 goals, but we scored 118 in all competitions and the reason we scored so many is because of Jack and his presence."

The Bloaters lost 4-0 to Clyde in their opening friendly at the Wellesley last week.
