Wensum Albion Football Club celebrates their 15th anniversary on Saturday 29th April with the current squad taking on a team consisting of the Wensum Old Boys who have formerly played for the club over the past 15 years.
Wensum Albion Football Club celebrates their 15th anniversary on Saturday 29th April with the current squad taking on a team consisting of the Wensum Old Boys who have formerly played for the club over the past 15 years. The match will take place at Pound Lane (opposite Thorpe School) at 3pm in the afternoon in what should be a competitive friendly played in good spirit.
The match also coincides with the clubs annual presentation night to be held in the evening at the Griffin Public House near Thorpe. The current team, sponsored by Hatch Brenner Solicitors, have had a relatively successful season, finishing 3rd in Division Three of the Rogers and Norton Norwich Business Houses League. This came after poor seasons in 2004/05 for both the First Team playing in Division 1 and the Reserves playing in Division 2. As a consequence the committee made the decision to merge the two sides and start afresh, a decision that seems to have paid off this season.
The introduction of a new female manager has also contributed to the teams improvements. Julie Bowes-Shorten took over the management of the side at the beginning of the season and has done a fantastic job, although the sight of a women manager parading down the touchline has certainly caused much discussion amongst the opposition's players and management!
Julie, who has followed the team for many years, is looking forward to the match. “It will be a great day for everyone involved and a chance for the old boys to catch up with one another. So many local football clubs in the area last only a few seasons before folding so the club has good reason to celebrate its 15th birthday”
Barry Halkyard will captain the Old Boys squad and is hoping the team can give the current batch of players a run for their money. Barry said “Some of these lads are getting on in years but they will be putting in 100%. You never lose that competitive nature!”
