Wisbech Town’s new boss Gary Setchell has challenged his men to start taking points off the UCL Premier Division’s top sides after a lacklustre start to the season.

Setchell, who took over following Dick Creasey’s resignation last week, says the Fenmen must reverse their stop-start form if they are to challenge for the league title, as expected.

Setchell began his second stint in the managerial hot-seat with a convincing 4-0 win over St Andrews last Saturday- with goals from Michael Frew, who hit a double, Josh Ford and Alex Beck – but the former King’s Lynn Town chief says there is still plenty of work to do.

“It’s clear to me that the players have under-achieved so far this year,” he told the club’s official YouTube channel.

“I can’t judge on performances because I’ve not been here, but you’d expect them to not have lost four out of six games.

“They know the potential is there so it’s obviously more of a mental thing than an ability thing.

“We won 4-0 and no disrespect to St Andrews but with the players we’ve got I expected us to win.

“I learnt a lot from the game and there are positives, but there’s a lot of negatives and that’s something that we’ll be focussing on in training and in games over the next few weeks.”

The Fenmen will now look to haul themselves back into title contention with a run of wins – beginning with three points from their visit to Rothwell Corinthians today.

Corinthians sit four points above Wisbech in seventh and Setchell says his new side must begin to take advantage of sides above them slipping up.

“The leaders will now have to drop points before we drop points again,” he said.

“We’re playing catch up now – you don’t lose six or seven games and win the UCL, that’s a fact.

“I got 106 and 108 points at King’s Lynn and didn’t win the league. We’ve lost four games now and not all of them have been against top-six opposition.

“They are points dropped so we have to try and take points off the top teams. We’re capable of that but there’s a lot of work to be done.”
