Norwich City defender Jason Shackell was today the subject of a shock £1m transfer raid by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Sources close to the Molineux club claim the bid for the 24-year-old's services has been rejected by the Canaries - at least until manager Glenn Roeder can get in cover for Shackell, who has played 129 games for the club since his debut in April 2003.

City currently only have four recognised defenders in their squad, Shackell, Adam Drury, who has not played since October, Jon Otsemobor and Gary Doherty, who only signed a new two-year deal earlier this week.
