Norwich City’s Under-23s head coach Matt Gill insists his youngsters will relish trying to tame Bournemouth’s highly-rated striker Callum Wilson in Wednesday’s Premier League Cup tie on the south-coast (KO 7pm).

Wilson is poised to feature for the Cherries as an over-age outfield player in his comeback outing from a second serious knee injury.

The prolific 25-year-old forward was touted with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea before two long term cruciate knee ligament injuries.

“For our two centre-halves that’s a huge opportunity against a Premier League striker,” said Gill. “For that to happen is brilliant, so for me, the more they drop down the better. It helps our lads with their learning and can only accelerate it. It’s a really good opportunity for them to come up against different styles of football. This week might bring a few different challenges, as Bournemouth may drop some players down. It’s another long journey. It’s a stadium game, which the boys love. We’re looking for a better start, without a shadow of a doubt. We’ve worked on things in training which might help trigger that, but we still want to see the same grit and resilience too.”

Gill’s squad will travel buoyed by a four-match unbeaten run in Premier League Two.

“We’ve had some decent results, and some that have disappointed us a bit because we felt we should have got more,” Gill told the club’s official site. “We’re at the point now where we need to start games better.

“We seem to be at our best when we are behind so we need to start games more positively. That’s what we’ve been working on the last week or so, to really be on the front foot from the off.

“Results-wise, to come back in matches, shows there’s a real positivity around the boys. They’re resilient and never think they’re beaten, which are great attributes for young lads to have. A lot of young teams, if they go two goals down early on, could go under. I’ve praised the grit they’ve shown, we just need to make sure we’re the team going two goals up now.”
